Disruptive technologies are now changing the publishing game—and not for the first time. Here’s a quick snapshot of publishing history:

1440s: The invention of the printing press puts knowledge directly into the hands of ordinary people.

1500s to 1700s. Presses are established throughout Europe, increasing the number of books in circulation and boosting literacy rates.

1800s. Industrialization makes printing faster and more efficient. Modern publishing houses are established.

20th Century. Mass-market paperbacks, magazines, and comics further expand the literary landscape

Early 2000s. The digital age ushers in desktop publishing and new formats: e-books and audiobooks

2010 to today. Digital platforms give authors the tools to publish their work directly to readers, without traditional publishers, if they choose.
